Taking Charge (And Putting the Charge) Back in Your Life
September 28, 2018
Lately at Urban Fitness, we’ve been noticing a trend. People aren’t coming to us so much because they want six pack abs or a slimmer belly… they aren’t calling us for help because they want their arms to fill out their sleeves better… they aren’t coming into the gym to tone up their bodies so they look better in a bikini. Lately, people are coming to us because they just lack energy. They can’t keep up with other people in the office. They don’t have the energy to play with their kids when they get home from work. They just don’t have to strength to really enjoy their lives. They’re depleted. They’re tired. And they’re tired of being tired.
It’s not normal to not have the energy to get through a regular day. It SHOULD be normal to wake up in the mornings feeling rested and vibrant, to make it through your afternoon without feeling tired and wanting a nap, and to play actively with your children in the evening, or have a game of ball with your mates.
For people who are in this situation, there are actually two different ways you can look at this. Coming from a book I read actually called ‘The Charge’ by Brendon Burchard, there are a lot of people who can’t get through a normal day with high energy levels and believe that’s the way it just is… when in actual fact, it just isn’t.
There are two different ways to look at this situation (from another book I just read called ‘Mindset’)... you can address it either from a growth or a fixed mindset. People who have a growth mindset have a more optimistic and positive view of life. They see possibilities, options and potential in their lives. People with a fixed mindset, on the other hand, view the world more pessimistically. They see neverending challenges and hurdles and are often completely resigned to the way things are.
Optimistic people view where they are as a temporary thing. They recognize that they have the power to make changes to their own lives and understand it is well within their power to make changes to their situation. That’s what the people who are applying for our new program are recognizing. They understand that where they are is temporary and that they have the power to make positive changes starting TODAY.
People with a fixed mindset feel trapped. They may think they were born this way, or that they have no power to do anything about their situation. They may feel overwhelmed and defeated, and simply accept where they are as their lot. If you find yourself sitting at home, watching your shows, eating a bowl of Cheerios and you think “this is just the way life has to be…” Please know that this ISN’T it. You REALLY can change it.
People who live life with a growth mindset have been clinically shown to have better relationships, live happier and longer, and perform better. If you’re thinking… that’s just not me… I wasn't born that way… You aren’t really born one way or the other. These mindsets are learned. ANd while it may be a little harder to learn a growth mindset later in life, it is a choice. And you CAN start making that choice NOW. New neuro pathways can be developed, and you can make this change.
Now, if you are looking to get more energy back in your life, one of the things we have noticed the people coming to us seem to have in common is the lack of a good training program. They aren’t exercising with any consistency or at all, and they don’t have any kind of plan for where they want their exercise to take them. The rest usually takes care of itself, once this is resolved.
When you start exercising consistently, your sleep improves. You mood gets better. Your energy levels rise. Overall vitality and confidence improve. On the flip side of that, the people coming to us these last few weeks have been saying it was when they stopped with regular exercise that they started struggling with their energy levels, having trouble sleeping, and losing confidence. They weren’t eating as well as they should have and their mindset wasn’t as good as it should have been.
Now, you never have 100% growth mindset, or 100% fixed… but you can lean heavily toward one or the other. Even if you’ve let the fixed mindset creep in and overtake the growth mindset, it is well within your power to tip the scales back to a more growth oriented, optimistic mindset. Realize that you can change the situation you are in with both your outlook and effort. Sitting home and complaining about where you are isn’t going to change a thing. Take some ACTION to move yourself forward and watch how that snowballs and creates new opportunities, new confidence and new chances to grow!
