September Reboot: 5 Things You Can Implement NOW to Make Sure You’re on Track for the End of the Year
The end of the year and dare I say it… Christmas… is fast approaching! I don’t WANT to say Christmas, but we are getting closer to the holidays. What 5 things can you implement now to make sure you go into the holidays with a sense of achievement? Feeling good about the effort we’ve put in leading up to the holidays.
This is called my September Reboot. I implement this every year, and start to really think about what I have done so far this year, and what my goals are for next year. For me, this is the best time of the year to knuckle down and get some work done. This way, we feel like we go into the new year having achieved something.
The first step to the September Reboot is to evaluate the year so far. Evaluate how your actions have been so far… have you trained how you wanted to this year so far? How has your diet been? Are you eating the way you want to be, or are there still changes that need to be made? How’s your discipline? Are you sticking to your plans and goals, or do you find that you often need to get back into the swing of things after a few cheat days or weeks? No judgment--- just be honest.
Step two is to decide what you want for the rest of the year. Most years, when I get to the September Reboot, I am not happy with how I’ve been up to this point in the year. That’s why this can be my most productive time of the year. I realize there are only a few months left in the year, and I get laser focused on what I wanted to have accomplished and how I can get there. Knowing there are only a few months left in the year is extra motivation to reach my goals. We’ve had a great summer! The weather has been amazing… we’ve all been drinking beers, going to barbeques… and maybe not training how we wanted… being a bit looser around nutrition. That’s ok! That’s what summer’s for! But now it’s time to honestly assess what we need to do to reach our goals for the year.
For step three, I recommend you create a plan. Figure out what your goals are for the rest of the year, and create a plan that supports reaching those goals. For many of the people reading this, they are looking to get leaner and to drop a few inches/ pounds. It is totally reasonable to be able to drop two pounds a week with the right diet and exercise but you need to have a plan! Losing two pounds a week for the next 15 weeks sets you up going into the holidays 30 lbs leaner. Imagine how you would feel at 30 lbs leaner going into Christmas time!
Step number four is find support! This can be a training partner, a Facebook group, a new gym, or a coach. Here’s the thing… everyone knows how to stay fit and healthy. If you could do it on your own, you’d have done it already! Think about that… if you could do it on your own, you would have done it by now. There’s a disconnect there… you know you should be eating protein and vegetables, you know you should be doing some cardio, you know you should be participating in resistance training...but you’re not doing it! Everyone needs a support network. If you surround yourself with positive people on the same journey you are on, you are more likely to end up where you want to go. Fitness isn’t rocket science. Find people to encourage and support you on your journey, and it will dramatically increase your chances of success!
Finally, step number five: Implement your plan! Don’t be one of those people that falls at the first hurdle with no will power or discipline at all. You know what it is you want to do, just decide you are going to do it… take the actions you need to take… and Stick. To. the. Plan. Here’s the thing: if you put the right steps and processes in place, you could reasonably be 30 lbs leaner by Christmas.
Flip that on its head, and think about how you will feel if you don’t take these steps. How will you feel going into the holidays if you DON’T do what you said you’d do at the start of September? What’s that going to feel like… when you know you are going into the holidays, where you will likely put on a couple more pounds, knowing that you didn’t stick to the plan you made in September?
So what are you waiting for?! Just take some action and get it done!
