You and hubby decide this month you’re both going to lose some weight and get healthy together. You immediately start pinning away on your #operationgetfit pinterest board, all the amazing healthy meals you’re going to make, the weight loss tracking print outs, the tips to become a morning person because you’re going to finally going to be one of those people.
You’re counting your steps, counting your calories, and finding every excuse to get up and move as often as you can.
You’re down a few pounds and feeling pretty good.
Dear husband cuts out soda. He replaces his sugar bomb of a morning cereal with a slightly adultier version, picks around the extra greens you’ve been loading on his plate and you’ve seen him take the dog for a few more walks than normal.
And somehow he’s halfway to his goal.
Something tells me this won’t surprise you, but, fat loss, in and of itself, can be a bit tougher for you than men.
Genetically speaking, things just function differently for you by design. Let’s dive into understanding the differences so you can work with your body to lose excess fat efficiently.
Women naturally have a lower basal metabolic rate than men. This means you can eat less calories than your male counterpart and lose the same amount of weight. This is because, generally speaking, men are born with a higher muscle mass than women. Muscle is one of the most metabolically active tissues in your body. The more of it you have, the faster your basal metabolic rate is.
The female body tends to store excess fat in the thigh, hip and lower abdomen. These areas are known to have different receptor cells in charge of the rate of fat metabolism. Don’t worry, men at least got stuck with this one too, our problem area tending to be the lower back. Think Tony Soprano poolside...yeah.
Lastly, women generally require a higher amount of essential fat. Men can function with only 2%-5% body fat while women require 10%-13%.
As you can see, comparing your fat loss to your male counterpart just doesn’t do your hard work justice. When you focus on utilizing effective exercise and nutritional tools, you too can shed the excess fat and take your body to the level of fitness you desire.
One thing I know all women have that gives you the major upperhand in all things is determination.
Working harder for the same outcome is something you’re used to and your leg up is that serious effort equals serious results.
