You’ve heard it from Mom, the doctor, your neighbor, commercials and even instagram.
Drink. More. Water.
Well, add me to the list of nags.
Completely ignore the fact that staying hydrated, specifically drinking enough water, positively impacts absolutely every function of your body. I’ll get you reaching for a glass with just a read about what water can do for your weight loss journey.
Yes- Drinking a glass of water before a meal helps you avoid overeating. A glass first thing in the morning boosts your mood and metabolism. Cold water even burns calories all on its own.
But did you know-
Lean muscle is about 80% water. That water is essential to optimal muscle performance. When you’re not properly hydrated your muscle tissue loses water, making it difficult to contract efficiently. This reduces your strength and endurance. Even just a 1% drop from optimal hydration can reduce your physical ability by 5%. This means for someone who burns 300 calories per work out, being even slightly dehydrated can leave you with 5,000 unburned calories per year. Not staying hydrated, without getting too textbook, aside from feeling weaker, puts a serious stress on your fitness progress.
Still not convinced?
Take exercise out of the equation.
If you use the same example above, 1% below optimal hydration leading to a 5% decrease in caloric burn, your resting metabolism can be drop by 65-100 calories a day. That’s up to 34,000 calories a year. Up to 10 pounds of fat a year you could have lost. Or kept from gaining in the first place.
