With Summer fast approaching many are kicking their fitness routine into high gear. It's always great to push yourself, but in the summer, being mindful of rising temps and humidity can not only help your performance, but keep you safe.
So I put together a few tips to keep in mind when working out this summer
#1 If you stopped reading after any tip, make it this one- Stay Hydrated. Don't wait to drink until your thirsty. When you're out in the summer sun, your body is using water to regulate your temperature. Stay ahead of fatigue, keep a large bottle of water with you and drink often. I can't stress enough how important it is to stay hydrated any time of year but especially if you're going to be out in the heat.
#2 Lather up in SPF. Do not skimp on the sunscreen, guys. Even if it's looking cloudy outside you need to protect your skin with at least SPF 30. Make sure you're reapplying every 2 hours during physical activity.
#3 Be mindful of the time. It's best to exercise outside in the wee hours of the morning or in the early evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Try to avoid any intense activity between 10am and 3pm. If staying inside isn't an option, try to stay out of direct sunlight and again, drink lots of water.
#4 Don't hold yourself to the same exact performance standards. The results you get working out in an air conditioned gym on a 65 degree day are going to be different than being outside in the summer heat. Give yourself the space to be safe and set realistic goals.
#5 Don't over do it. You want to look good on the beach, I get it. But pushing 2 workouts a day and hours of cardio in the beginning might be more of a risk than it's worth in the summer. So listen to your body. It's easy to brush off being tired in the heat, but if you start feeling dizzy, faint or nauseated you need to stop and give your body a break.
Summer is a great time to be active and enjoy the things you can't do in the winter time. Get outside and have fun, but listen to your body and treat it right.
