Many people find going to the gym an anxiety-filled experience, and even just thinking about the gym can make their heart race and their palms sweaty. Gym anxiety is very common, especially for those who are new to working out or are joining a new gym.
If you do suffer from gym anxiety don’t worry as you’re not alone. A lot of people feel intimidated and anxious about the idea of people staring at them, judging them, or the fact that they might not quite know what they’re doing. This is where our team at Urban Fitness can help, and make your journey of joining a gym and becoming confident, easier than ever.
We have put together this short post, with a few suggestions on how you can overcome pre-gym anxiety and feel confident again. Urban Fitness is South Dublin’s leading group coaching gym, providing members with both group training and personal training from our state-of-the-art gym facility.

Remember that Nobody is Judging You
If you’re new to the gym, you might feel like everyone is judging you and talking about you from the moment that you walk in. But in reality, they’re not. Everyone at the gym is there to work on themselves, and are judging you. It’s highly likely that the people you think are judging and looking at you haven’t even noticed you, and they’re just focussing on their own workout.
Another thing to remember is that everyone started somewhere, so the people at the gym won’t be judgemental of you and where you are at with your fitness journey. Don’t worry about anyone else, and just focus on yourself. You can even bring a friend or family member with you to join in on the session if you feel like that would put you more at ease and make you more comfortable.
Visit the Gym and Get a Feel for The Environment Before You Join
To help ease your gym anxiety, why not visit the gym prior to joining? A lot of us can feel anxious about going into an unfamiliar environment that they don’t know their way around, with lots of unfamiliar equipment. By arranging to visit the gym prior to joining, you can get to know the layout of the gym and the equipment.
It also gives you the opportunity to meet the staff at the gym, and they can hopefully help to ease your worries too. They will be able to show you around, explain to you how to use the equipment, and make you feel comfortable in the gym environment. It also allows you to meet the staff so that when you join and visit the gym for the first time, there will be some familiar faces there to help you integrate.
Work with a Personal Trainer or Try A Group Class
Whilst a lot of us have fitness goals, many of us actually don’t know where to start. This can bring us a lot of gym anxiety as we might feel like we don’t know what we are doing at the gym, that we are performing exercises wrong, or that we look silly. If you feel like you don’t know where to begin at the gym and you want some help, this is where a personal trainer comes in.
Most gyms have personal trainers working there, and they will be friendly and approachable for you to go over and speak to. Or perhaps you might feel more comfortable taking part in a group class, where you’ll be working out with lots of other people on their own fitness journeys. Both personal training and group classes can help you to feel more relaxed and at ease, and help you to build your confidence at the gym.
